Ambystoma mexicanum, also known as the axolotl, is a species of salamander that is native to Mexico. They are known for their unique ability to regenerate lost body parts, including limbs, the spinal cord, the heart, and even parts of their brain. Axolotls are highly prized in scientific research due to their regenerative abilities and are also popular as pets.

Axolotls are aquatic amphibians that live in freshwater habitats such as lakes, ponds, and canals. They are neotenic, meaning they retain their larval form throughout their life and do not undergo metamorphosis into an adult salamander. They have external gills that allow them to breathe underwater and are able to regenerate these gills if they become damaged.

Axolotls are carnivorous and feed on a variety of small aquatic animals such as insects, crustaceans, and small fish. They are also known to cannibalize each other if food is scarce. In the wild, axolotls are threatened by habitat loss and pollution and are listed as critically endangered species.
