Chlorogomphus papilio is a beautiful and very large dragonfly. It inhabits in the range of 500-1500 meters above sea level, preferring the environment with clear mountain streams in lush forests. It is an insect that sleeps at night and emerges in the daytime. It flies very fast, mostly at dusk, and preys on mosquitoes. The breeding method is to drop several eggs on the water surface each time in the way of "dragonfly skimming the water". Juveniles are aquatic and adults are terrestrial. It is distributed in China (Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hunan, Sichuan, Yunnan, Zhejiang) and Vietnam.
(Chlorogomphus papilio Ris, 1927) is the only species of subgenus Aurorachlorus Carle (1995) in the world. In 1927, the entomologist Ris published a strange dragonfly from Guangdong, China. According to the special shape of the female type specimen, he named this dragonfly "papilio", which means butterfly.
The wingspan of female individuals can exceed 150 mm, which is a well-deserved giant insect and a giant star in the world dragonfly industry. Just like giant pandas in dragonflies, they have been given high attention by entomologists around the world. 2016 is the 90th year of discovery, and the field survey has also yielded new results. A female individual found in central Guizhou has a wingspan of 156 mm, which has also become an insurmountable limit for Chinese dragonflies.
Large size, strong flying ability and fast speed. Living in remote mountains and forests, it is not easy to collect. It is an insect that sleeps at night and emerges in the daytime. Their huge bodies can only take off under the sunlight.
There are two main reasons why Chlorogomphus papilio has attracted attention. First, it is huge and easy to be found. Second, most species have obvious colors, which can easily distinguish them from other dragonflies. Among the large dragonflies, groups with bright colors on their wings are very rare, and the case of Chlorogomphus papilio is special. Chlorogomphus papilio is a valuable natural asset. In addition to being an aristocratic member of the dragonfly family in identity and status, it is also a powerful assistant for human beings to assess the ecological environment.
